About The Technology Of This Site
- Our intention was not to build a technology driven website using dogs as the subject but to take what we knew to be the latest web and mobile technologies and use them to help the dog community at large.
- Our background and passion is open source so at its foundation is a linux OS using rails, apache and mysql. The modern day backbone of the web.
- The brains behind the site is google and its geo-mapping platform. Before google maps you used a hard coded zip code database that calculated distances between a zip code center point. With gmaps, you get distance calculations, reverse address look ups and driving directons all for free(sort of).
- GEMS in use: aws-s3, rmagick, twitter, passenger, and capistrano
- The site is hosted on the Amazon EC2 cloud using the new bootable EBS blocks for persistence across the Amazon empire. Its' file system level persistence similar to data storage on AWS.
- The iPhone application allowed us to take everything we did on the site and go mobile with it.
